Mutants have exposed themselves.
Magneto & his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attacked MacArthur Air Force base on the outskirts of Manhattan right before March, and showed the entire world his power as he and his allies slaughtered through dozens of soldiers, and American artillery in the hopes of obtaining nuclear weaponry as a bargaining tool against the United States government. However, the X-Men led by Charles Xavier came to the aid of the Air Force, helping to push back Magneto and his allies, and ultimately securing the nuclear stockpile – and ending his reign of terror for that day, but the damage was done. Images and video of Magneto and the X-Men hit the airwaves, Internet, and media without minutes; the world is now aware that mutants lie amongst them.
Washington was not sure how to respond, a new administration in public office – a first time President is slightly inept to handling the question; humans all over the country and government are shell shocked and not sure quite what mutants are, what they are capable of, or where they came from – but the public wants a response. American nuclear weapons were almost in the hands of terrorists of the likes the world had never seen before; Bosnia, Pakistan – the terrorist of old is gone; they now come with their own genetic weaponry. The media has undergone a firestorm, trying to figure out who Magneto is, what he can do – and how to tell if others are just like him and the X-Men.
Senior Senator Robert Kelly of New York has taken to action. Putting a task force to work, Senator Kelly is on the verge of debuting his legislation towards answering the mutant question – his goal to be a platform for higher office. However, he has recently learned that the Sentinel Mark I project designed by brilliant, and deceased scientist Stephen Lang has been sold to a private benefactor – entirely out of his reach of incorporating into policing mutants; but who would have the interest, power, and money to do such a thing?
In the dark is the Hellfire Club – working behind the scenes to counter the mutant question on their own prerogative. Pushing a stronger mutant Inner Circle, Sebastian Shaw and his allies are working towards manipulating the government’s strings so that oppressive mutant legislation is not passed; but at what cost – and how strongly does power corrupt the thirsty?
Faced with now having to go underground, and risk never exposing themselves for the safety of the children at the Xavier Institute; Professor X and his mutant X-Men work off the sidelines, using their alien technology and knowledge of the Brotherhood to hopefully put an end to Magneto and his terrorist activities; though little do they know their lives are about to get a whole lot more complicated.
Many more mutants have started to come out of the wood works – their powers either manifesting at the start, or older mutants failing to continue to hide amongst regular American citizens. The world has already accepted the fact that they, too, have mutants amongst them…and the response is ultimately of confusion, waiting to see how to react to the ….
